 Day On The Hill 2019

Advocacy in Action = LeadingAge Tennessee members meeting with lawmakers and advocating for older adults at our State Capitol. Joe Franco, VP of Grassroots, LeadingAge National, joined us in our visits along with Meagan Frazier, Esq., and Allie Jones, lobbyist with Harris Frazier Government Relations. Prior to our visits, we reviewed some of the bills this year that we are actively watching and engaged in. We were happy to welcome our 28 new House members, 4 new Senators and Gov. Bill Lee.  We shared our stories and our strong support for the Alzheimer’s Advisory Council as well as stating our ask for their support on various bills.

 LeadingAge Summit 2019

Along with many visits to our state capital this season, our Executive Director, Gwyn Earl, was able to join hundreds from across the nation to advocate on Capital Hill in D.C. Our top conversations included asking for greater support for the Workforce Quality Act, direct the Government Accountability Office to study and report on the long-term services and supports (LTSS) workforce crisis/financing reform and addressing the shortage of affordable housing for older adults.

Our Story is Your Story: LeadingAge National to Launch Member Survey

LeadingAge National will launch a biennial survey of its members in June 2019. The survey initiative is designed to produce a host of meaningful data that LeadingAge and its members can use to conduct data-driven planning and decision making. Member organizations will receive one survey for each of their service lines. Each survey will arrive by email and will take about 10-12 minutes to complete.

Here are 4 ways the LeadingAge member survey can help you tell your story:

  1. Compare yourself to others in the field.
  2. Find out national and state-level workforce turnover rate.
  3. Reap the benefits of data-driven advocacy at the state and federal levels.
  4. Lay the groundwork for the future.

Over the next several weeks, you may receive a call or email from a LeadingAge National staff member to gather current contact information to ensure the survey’s success. Please take a moment to answer our correspondence as accurate information is key! Thank you!

How do older baby boomers want to age? Would they prefer to travel or work, to practice their religion, or engage in social activities? If these adults, ages 60-72, develop physical or cognitive impairments, would they prefer to live at home, with family or friends, or in a place that is professionally staffed to provide health care and help with daily activities? And what about living alone?

In a quest to better understand older adults’ attitudes and expectations around quality of life and aging -- particularly should they become physically or cognitively impaired and need long term services and supports -- LeadingAge, in conjunction with NORC, in January 2019 surveyed a representative sample of 1200 older adults between the ages of 60 and 72. Selected because they are more likely to have peers who may already be experiencing the need for help with activities of daily living and can more easily imagine themselves in that position, we asked older boomers to imagine they had a physical or cognitive impairment and needed help.
