“Magic Penny” by Malvina Reynolds & "Indescribable" by Chris Tomlin
Eric is a graduate of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a Master of Music degree, and a graduate of Asbury Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree. He serves as the Director of Chaplain Services for Shannondale of Maryville and Knoxville; two Covenant Living communities in East Tennessee. As an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, he is also in the process on getting his Doctorate. One of my great passions is running, even with two total hip replacements. He is an advocate for those needing joint replacement.
Why does this song give you courage?
It speaks of a great and awesome God who placed the stars in the sky and knows them by name. In difficult and challenging times, it gives me courage to know that I serve a God who is mightier than any struggle I face, and with Him by my side, I will not stumble or fall.
What did you learn about Ted?
I’ve learned how his life has evolved over the last 10 years. Our God is a God of new beginnings, always providing opportunities for growth as we love Him and others. A few years ago, they even drove approximately 250 miles round-trip to attend my credentialing service at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. That’s the kind of special and supportive person Ted is.
Ted is an 87-year-old retiree residing at Shannondale of Maryville since January 2010, having spent the last thirty years of my ministry in program and administration for church-related outdoor education at camps and retreat centers. As an ordained minister in The United Methodist Church, I have dedicated much of my life to this work.
Why does this song give you courage?
The song “Magic Penny” revolves around the theme of sharing and the joy it brings. I firmly believe that the two greatest gifts from God are the gift of LIFE and the gift of LOVE. In my experience, life without love is hardly worth living; it is through love that I find purpose, meaning, joy, and courage. Knowing that I am loved and have people with whom to share love enriches my life profoundly.
What did you learn about Eric?
I learned, I knew very little about his life during his college years and his first few years following graduation. I had known that music was one of Eric’s gifts; however, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that one of his first jobs in the music entertainment business was as a performer at Opryland in Nashville, Tennessee. It was this job that redirected his life from his native Illinois to his now home in Knoxville, Tennessee.
